Little support for NDP to prop up PCs
TORONTO JUNE 5th,
2014 - In
a random sampling of public opinion taken by the Forum Poll™ among 733 Ontario
voters, one half say the NDP should support the Liberals if the PCs are elected
to a minority in the coming election (49%), where just one third say the NDP
should support the PCs in a minority government (33%). Among those who think
the NDP should support the Liberals in a PC minority, close to half favour a
formal coalition (45%), while fewer opt for a less formal arrangement (39%).
The vast majority of Liberals call for NDP support in this situation, of course
(89%), while a clear majority of NDP voters do so as well (59%). Just one
seventh of NDP voters think the party should support a PC minority (14%).

If, on the other hand, the Liberals elect a minority, one
half still thinks the NDP should support them (51%), compared to just a third
who think the party should support the PCs (32%). Among the relatively few
calling for NDP/PC cooperation, appetite is highest for a less formal
arrangement (58%) rather than a formal coalition (24%). Virtually all Liberals
call for the NDP to support them (93%), as do close to two thirds of NDP
supporters (62%).

“This is an indication the PCs will need a majority to be
effective in the legislature, regardless of party leader comments now. There is
just too much public support for centre-left cooperation and, seemingly, no
appetite for a government which shuts the Liberals out," said Forum Research President, Dr.
Lorne Bozinoff.
